Helping people change behaviour can be a difficult task. Skilled practitioners often struggle to support the people they work with in behaviour change and end up resorting to try to persuade and convince change which rarely works. The aim of Motivational Interviewing (MI) training is to enable staff at all levels to increase their competency at supporting the people they work with to change their behaviour, specifically around any lifestyle change often recommended as part of long-term condition management. MI can be used helpfully in managing weight, smoking cessation, increased physical activity, medication adherence, substance use, healthy eating, and any other behaviour change.
Optimal Change is facilitating a 4-session introduction to MI workshop adapted to online training that provides an excellent start to begin to gain proficiency in learning this psychological method. Motivational Interviewing works by activating a person’s own motivation for change within a psychological safe space to discuss barriers to changing. Patients who have received MI in numerous clinical trials are more likely to improve health and other behaviours than those receiving traditional treatment. Improvements have been demonstrated in diabetes control, healthy eating and physical activity, stress reduction, safer sexual health behaviours, decreased drug & alcohol consumption and smoking cessation as well as other behaviours. Using MI as a behavioural change method for clinicians as part of a whole systems approach can impact on health inequalities, premature deaths and health improvement.
