Diabetic Eye Screening 101

Author: Richard Cragg - Programme Manager for the Derbyshire Diabetic Eye Screening Programme.

 

My Background:

I have worked in the NHS for 32 years, initially as Deputy Head of Medical Photography NUH, then as Head of Ophthalmic Imaging NUH, and now the Programme Manager for Diabetic eye screening at UHDB.

My degree is in Ophthalmic Science & Technology

I am past Chairman of the Ophthalmic Imaging Association, council member for the British Association of Retinal Screeners, and represented my association on the National Sceening governing committee.

I am also an active national screening Professional Clinical Advisor that carries out peer reviews of other Programmes and Trust.

 

Synopsis:

This talk will help give an understanding of why we screen, and the different ways in which diabetes effects the eye.

It will also discuss how the diabetic eye screening grading works, and what constitutes, background disease, intermediate disease, and urgent disease requiring immediate treatment.

Learning outcomes:

•    Gain a basic understanding of the anatomy of the eye

•    Gain a basic understanding of the pathologies that occur in the eye due to diabetes

•    Understand on a basic level the separate processes that take place that lead to diabetic retinopathy and maculopathy.

•    Learn the difference between ischaemic and oedematous pathologies and how they are graded in diabetic eye screening.

•    Have a visual understanding of diabetic retinal pathologies, such micro-aneurysms, haemorrhages, exudates, intra-retinal microvascular abnormalities, new vessels, venous beading and cotton wool spots.

•    Gain a understanding of other diabetic eye related pathologies, such as cataracts, rubeosis Iridis, lack of blue light sensitivity, corneal ulcers, cranial nerve palsies, myopic changes, photo stress and night blindness.

•    Understand that all patients that are screened are given final grade consisting of a Retinopathy and Maculopathy code, and that this is recorded on a database.
