The course covers:

• The immune system & how vaccines work

• Aims of the immunisation programme

• Current immunisation schedule, from birth to older ages

• Different composition of vaccines

• Vaccine preventable diseases

• Routine immunisation programme & strategies to improve uptake

• Legal aspects surrounding immunisation (including the use of Patient Group Directions, consent, accountability and delegation)

• Storage and handling of vaccines, including the cold chain

• Recognition and treatment of anaphylaxis and other adverse events that may occur following vaccination

• Administration of intramuscular injections (refresher)

• Safe disposal of sharps in practice

• The importance of accurate record keeping following immunisations

 

Aim of course: To ensure that Practice Nurses have the appropriate up to date knowledge and skills in order to administer vaccines safely.

This course meets the National Minimum Standards and Core Curriculum for Immunisation Training for Registered Healthcare Practitioners. Revised 2018
