Dementia has an impact on many parts of the brain, including the parts responsible for physical feelings and language.

This can mean that physical sensations felt by a person living with dementia can be difficult to identify and articulate, which can make it challenging to manage. It’s important for any healthcare professional engaging with a person affected by dementia to understand these additional barriers, and how to overcome them.

This course looks at how to approach pain management, as well as how to record it and assess it.

The modules covered in this course include:

• Describing how pain is experienced

• How damage to the brain caused by dementia may affect a person’s experience of pain

• Why people with dementia are at risk of experiencing unmanaged pain

• Different ways that people with dementia might express pain

• Identifying barriers to pain management and how to overcome these

• Methods of assessing pain in people with dementia
