Insulin Initiation

·     Know the different insulin regimens available

·     Identify the patient’s support and educational needs in order to stay well on insulin, and agree how to meet them

·     Communicate effectively with patients in order to facilitate shared decision making

·     Advise the patient about injection technique, devices, insulin practicalities, blood glucose monitoring, and travel

·     Review and record treatment at timely intervals

·     Work in partnership with the patient to identify strategies to minimise weight gain and to set activity targets

·     Recommend a change in dose, regimen or type of insulin based on patient needs
